2025 SPAWNS A NEW CHAPTER IN CLASSIC TRIALS

A BRIGHTER FUTURE FOR THE SPORT

Humble Beginnings

This series was originally created by Gerry Minshall, Alan Wright, and Peter Salt, with support from Fredina Minshall. They had years of experience in trials riding and event organisation.

Alan and Peter had competed in the old ACU Classic Championship for Pre-65 and Twinshock bikes, which later evolved into the Normandale series. But as modern bikes took over and the Sammy Miller series faded, there was a gap for a proper national classic trials championship.

In 2014, they launched the series with backing from In Motion, Stav Chorley, The Twinshock Shop, and Hofmann Precision Balancing Ltd. KIA became the main sponsor in 2015, supporting cash prizes and awards until 2020, when Rockshocks, through Gary and Caroline Fleckney, took over.

The series was designed to be fully off-road, requiring no road licenses and events were spread across the country to balance travel costs. Each round had clubman and expert routes, allowing a wide range of riders and bikes to compete. To keep things fresh, clubs and venues rotated every couple of years.

The focus was always on traditional trials—no-stop riding with bikes staying true to their era. No converted monoshocks, modernised machines or special builds. The series relied on riders to self-police and follow class rules. A well-set-up 70s bike like a Yamaha TY175 could still win in the expert class without excessive modifications.

For years, the series provided a place for riders who loved classic bikes and proper no-stop trials. Championship winners received awards at the annual Classic Offroad Show in Telford.

In 2024, after years of dedication, Gerry and Fredina Minshall made the decision to step away from running the series. Their hard work and commitment had built a strong foundation and the series is now in the hands of Richard Webster and Chris Garlick, who are taking it forward into the next chapter.

A New Chapter

In 2025, the Classic Trials Championship moves forward with fresh leadership—people who respect the sport’s heritage but aren’t afraid to bring in new ideas. With experience at both national and international levels, they’re here to keep the series running smoothly while staying true to what makes classic trials special.

Keeping Classic Trials Classic

The Championship is still all about no-stop rules, vintage bikes and a friendly, welcoming atmosphere. At its core, classic trials is about skill, camaraderie and a love for well-ridden old machines. That’s not changing.

Catering for All Riders

A big focus moving forward is making sure newcomers and clubman riders feel at home. The three-route format—Clubman, Intermediate and Expert—gives everyone a chance to ride at their own level. Experienced competitors and volunteers are always around to offer advice, helping newer riders build confidence and improve.

Keeping Things Fresh

Tradition comes first, but that doesn’t mean standing still. Better event coordination, stronger online communication and a few fresh ideas will make the championship easier to follow and more enjoyable for riders and spectators alike.

Looking Ahead

This Championship is more than just a series of competitions—it’s a community. The goal is to keep classic trials alive and thriving by:

  • Running great events – Well-organized competitions that respect tradition but don’t get stuck in the past.
  • Keeping it authentic – Sticking to no-stop rules, real classic bikes and an affordable, accessible approach.
  • Encouraging new riders – Creating an atmosphere where beginners feel welcome and supported.
  • Building for the future – Strengthening ties with clubs, volunteers and sponsors to keep the sport strong.

Whether you’re a long-time rider, just getting into trials, or simply love old bikes, the Classic Trials Championship is here for you. Come along, take part, and help shape the future of the sport.
